What is a passkey?
Passkeys are secure and easy-to-use alternatives to passwords. With a passkey, you can log in using the method you already use to unlock your device, without having to remember your passwords. Behind the scenes, passkeys use public-key cryptography to generate cryptographic key pairs that are unique to your account and specific to Roblox.
Once created, passkeys synchronize across your devices under the same Apple, Google, or Windows platform accounts or the password manager you use, ensuring your digital keys are always at hand. For more information about passkeys, refer to resources provided by Google, Apple, and Microsoft.
Passkeys offer strong protections against phishing and credential stuffing attacks. We encourage everyone to set up passkeys for reduced friction and strong security.
How to add a passkey
Adding a passkey is a simple 3-step process:
- Navigate to Settings on your iOS app, Android app, or web browser. Log in if prompted.
- Under Account Info > Login Methods, press the Add Passkey button.
- Note: You may need to verify your identity with your password or a one-time code sent to your email.
- To complete adding a passkey, you will be asked to unlock your device.
Note: For your security, only add passkeys to devices you personally own.
Use your passkey to login
Once you've added a passkey, you can log into Roblox using the same method you use to unlock your device, such as Face ID, Touch ID, or a numeric screen lock.
Use your passkey to login on another device
If you have a passkey on your mobile device, you can use it to login to your computer:
- Click on the username field and select Passkey from Nearby Device… or Use a Different Passkey in the web browser's login form.
- A QR code will display on your screen. Scan this QR code with your mobile device and follow the on-screen instructions.
Manage your passkeys
While passkeys offer a robust layer of security, we do not recommend adding passkeys on shared devices. If you have a passkey set up on a shared device, those who can unlock the devices may gain access to your account.
In such cases, promptly remove the passkey from Settings.
- Go to Settings on your iOS app, Android app, or web browser. Login to your account if prompted.
- Under Account Info > Login Methods, press the Add Passkey button.
- Note: If you've already added a passkey, you'll see the "Manage" button instead.
- Press the trashcan icon next to the passkey you want to remove.
- You may be asked to verify your identity using passwords or an email one-time code.
Note: After you remove a passkey from Roblox, until it's also removed from your device's settings, you might still see the login option for the removed passkey.
For Users with 2-Step Verification Enabled
If you have 2-Step Verification enabled on your account, and choose to log in with a passkey, you will not be asked to pass a 2-Step Verification challenge. This is because having a successful login from a passkey verifies that you are in possession of your physical device. You can rest assured that the security of your account is not being compromised.
Note: If you log in with a method that is not passkey, then you will be asked to pass a 2-Step Verification challenge as per usual.
FAQs
What devices are compatible with passkeys?
You can now use passkeys to login to your Roblox accounts on iOS devices and Web browsers. The following devices support passkeys:
- A mobile device that runs at least iOS 16.
- A computer that runs at least Windows 10, macOS Ventura, or ChromeOS 109
- Supported browsers: Chrome version 109 or later, Safari version 16 or later, Edge version 109 or later.
- Hardware keys that are compliant with the FIDO2 standard.
What should I do if I can’t find passkeys on the login screen?
If you previously saved a passkey to your account but aren't prompted to use it at login, the troubleshooting steps depend on your device:
- If your current device uses the same operating system as the one with the saved passkey (e.g., from one iOS device to another), ensure you're logged into the same iCloud or Google account used when the passkey was saved. Also, consider updating your device to the latest system version.
- If your current device operates under a different system than the one with the saved passkey (e.g., from an iOS device to a Windows computer), passkeys will not synchronize. However, you can still regain access to your account by other methods, such as Quick Login, Email One-Time Code, or password. After successfully logging in, we recommend adding a passkey on the new device for easier future access.
What should I do if I am unable to login with a passkey?
This issue occurs if you're attempting to use a passkey that has been previously removed from Roblox. Unless you delete the passkey from your device's settings, you might still see it as a login option. Visit help articles from Apple, Google, Microsoft for more information on how to manage your passkeys on those platforms.
Try other login methods, such as Quick Login, Email One-Time Code, or password. If necessary, proceed with account recovery.
