Blocked Words is a feature in Communities to filter out unwanted words or phrases from the community’s Wall and Forums. This provides an additional layer of moderation to foster a positive and safe environment for everyone.
Community owners and members with the appropriate permissions can add, edit, or remove words and phrases from the blocked list at any time. Blocked Words is designed to supplement Roblox's existing safety and moderation systems, not replace them. All content on your Walls and Forums must still adhere to our Roblox Community Standards.
Creating a Blocked Words list
Community owners and members with appropriate permissions can view and manage Blocked Words. To get started:
-
- Go to Communities
- On website: Located on the left hand side
- On app or mobile device: Located in More (three dots)
- Select your desired community
- Select the Menu icon (three dots) located to the right of the community name
- Select Configure Community
- Go to the Content Moderation tab (desktop) or select in the dropdown (mobile)
- Under Blocked Words, enter a word or phrase, then select Add to include it in the blocked words list. Select Edit and Delete to manage the words and phrases on your existing blocklists.
- Go to Communities
This feature applies only to new posts on Walls and Forums. Past content that contains blocked keywords will not be filtered.
Configuring a Blocked Words list
You can customize your blocklists using different configurations of words and phrases.
-
- Exact Matching: The feature uses exact matching by default. For example, adding the word "fruit" to your list will only filter the word "fruit," not variations like "fruits" or "fruity."
- Partial Matching with Asterisks (*): For more flexible filtering, you can use an asterisk (*) as a wildcard. For instance, using *spam* will hide posts containing words like "spam," "spammer," “antispam,” or "superspammer."
- Bulk Add: You can add up to 50 keywords or phrases at once by separating each entry with a comma.
- Capacity: Your Blocked Words list can contain up to 1,000 active entries.
Any new post on Forums containing a keyword or phrase from your blocklist will be automatically hidden from other users. The user who wrote the post will still be able to see their own message, but it will not be visible to the rest of the community. For Walls, any posts containing blocked words and phrases are prevented from being posted entirely.
Role permissions
By default, only the community owner can manage a Blocked Words list. Permissions can be extended to admins and members to manage Blocked Words. Under the Configure Community section of your community settings, go to the Roles tab (desktop) or select in the dropdown (mobile). Here, you can set the ability to manage and view Blocked Words to Always On or Always Off.
Posts by the community owner are not filtered. This allows owners to communicate important rules and information to the community without being restricted.
