Adding trusted friends on Roblox ensures your digital interactions are with people you know and trust. The process depends on your age and whether you have completed certain verification steps.
Note: Availability for trusted friends varies by country. While we are rolling this feature to more countries over time, it may not be available in your region yet.
Prerequisite: Age estimation
Before you can access or add trusted friends, you must first estimate your age. If you have not completed this step, the trusted friend options will not be visible to you.
How to add trusted friends
The methods available to you depend on your age group. All age-checked users are eligible to become trusted friends.
Note: In specific regions, parental approval for trusted friends extends to older teenagers.
For Parent and Child (Automatic Upgrade)
Parents and children who meet these conditions will automatically upgrade to trusted friends:
Both parent and child must be age-checked.
Child and parent accounts must be linked, and both users must be friends.
For users aged 12 or under
Users in this age group can choose their trusted friends, but a parent must approve each request.
Child’s steps
For eligible age-checked friends, you can upgrade them directly from their profile:
Navigate to the friend's profile and tap the three-dot menu.
Select Add trusted friend.
Select Add after reviewing context about the other person.
Select Ask now to request your parent’s permission (if you haven’t linked a parent to your account, enter your parent’s email and select Send email).
Once your parent approves, the request is sent to your friend:
If they are under 13: Their parent must also approve the request.
If they are 13 or older: They can accept the request directly.
Parent’s steps
You will receive an email to review your child’s trusted friend request. Requests expire after 24 hours.
New parent accounts
If your account isn’t linked yet, the email will provide options to select Create account or Use existing account.
After setup, select Allow or Don’t Allow to approve or deny the request.
Linked parent accounts
Email
Select Review in the request email to open the request in Roblox.
Select Allow or Don’t Allow to approve or deny the request.
Parental Controls
Navigate to Pending requests in your settings to see any trusted friend requests.
Select Allow or Don’t Allow to approve or deny the request.
Review and manage your child’s trusted friends via Friends > Trusted filter.
For users aged 13-17
Teens can add other age-checked users through three primary methods:
Contact importer (Mobile only): You can add people directly from your phone’s contact list or accept requests from friends who added you via their contacts.
Go to Home.
Select the Add Friends "+" icon.
Choose Contacts.
Live QR code scan: To establish a trusted friend this way, you must scan a friend's QR code live.
Where to find your QR code:
In the Mobile or Desktop app, navigate to Home.
Select the Add Friends ("+") icon.
Select My QR.
How to scan: Use either your device's camera or the camera scanner icon on the upper right corner of the My QR page.
Upgrading: If you are already friends, scanning their code live will prompt you to upgrade them to a trusted friend.
Note: If you scan a screenshot of the code or use a shared profile link, they will only be added as a regular friend.
Invite link: If you and your friend are both age-checked 13+, you can send a Trusted friends invitation link from their profile.
Navigate to the friend’s profile.
Tap the three-dot menu.
Select Add trusted friend.
Select Add via link to share a link off-platform with that friend. Links expire after 30 days.
The status is finalized once your friend accepts the request through your link.
Mutual opt-in (Profile menu): If you and your friend are both in the 16–17 age group, you may be eligible to upgrade to Trusted Friends directly from their profile. Please note that availability for this feature can vary between users:
Navigate to the friend's profile.
Tap the three-dot menu.
Select Add trusted friend.
The status is finalized once they accept the request via their notifications or your profile.
For users aged 18 and older
Adults can add other age-checked users as trusted friends through several methods depending on the friend's age:
Adding other adults (18+): If both you and your friend are age-checked 18 or older, you can upgrade to Trusted Friends through a mutual opt-in:
Navigate to the Friend's profile and tap the three-dot menu.
Select Add trusted friend.
The status is finalized once they accept the request via their notifications or your profile.
Adding 13–17 year olds: To ensure real-life familiarity, adults can only add users aged 13-17 via Contact importer, Live QR code scanning, or Invite links.
Adding users under 13: You can request to add a child from their profile via the three-dot menu and selecting Add Trusted Friend. The child will need parental approval before they can accept the request.
Chatting with other adults: 1:1 chats between users who are both 18+ automatically upgrade to Expressive Chat (Party Voice and no filters). You do not need to be trusted friends for this specific feature upgrade.
How to view trusted friends
You can tell if someone is a Trusted Friend if they have a Trusted indicator next to their username. The indicator is visible in multiple locations:
Friends Tab: Open the Friends tab and select Trusted to filter your list to view only Trusted Friends.
Across the Platform: Trusted indicators are visible on your friend’s profile and within experience and Party chat.
How to remove or report trusted friends
You have full control over your trusted friends and can change or report them at any time.
To downgrade: Tap Remove trusted friend from their profile menu to return them to a regular friend status.
To Remove completely: Tap Remove friend to remove them from your list entirely.
Reporting: Standard violation reporting applies to all users. You can report a trusted friend at any time, just like a regular friend.
